How Long Does It Take to Form an LLC?

By the time some people ask us “How long does it take it form a limited liability company (LLC), and when should I start the process of forming it?” Our answer is often “there’s no better time than the present.” They have a check they need to cash into a business bank account, an employee to bring on, or a need that requires them to already be an official LLC.

Well, if you’re not yet in that situation, there’s no need for a time-traveling DeLorean. But NOW is the time to start your LLC because there are a lot of variables in determining how long it will take to get everything you need set up. Don’t worry, though, because we’re here to help you figure it out.

‘Stating’ the Issue

Why all the aforementioned variables? Because states vary not only in how fast they’re willing to process your LLC, but also how they’ll allow you to submit your information. The different ways you might have to submit your info to the State to get the LLC process rolling are:

  • Online – This one’s fast and painless; just fill out the state’s web form.
  • Fax – Not the most modern, but still fast.
  • Mail – Yes, we mean “snail mail,” with postage and whatnot. Not the fastest or most convenient option.
  • In Person – Even less convenient than postal mail, you’ll have to physically go to an office, find parking, wait in line, etc.

As for the processing time, some states are willing to tell you how long it will take, but others are more vague or secretive. Check your state’s website to see if they list a turnaround time. If you’re having ZenBusiness file your LLC paperwork for you (and you don’t even have to be a paying customer for this), one of the things we do is to call your state and keep you up to date on what the current processing time is.

By Our Calculations…

We have a state fees page that will not only tell you what your state’s fees are for filing for an LLC, but how long it typically takes in that state. Click on your state on the map and you’ll see our calculation for the state processing time plus the time it will take us to prepare and check your forms. And, if you purchase one of our annual plans, we’ll give you a specific date (as opposed to the more general estimates on the map) that we expect the process to be completed by.

Faster than a Speeding Mail Carrier

While the average processing time for an LLC is three to five weeks, with ZenBusiness, you also have the option to have us expedite the process for you for a fee. The three processing speeds are:

Did you know? The average processing time for an LLC is 3 to 5 weeks!

  • Standard – This is the usual processing speed, and this is what’s included in our most inexpensive plan, Starter. The speed varies by state, but the process is usually completed within 3 to 4 weeks.
  • Expedited – This faster processing speed is included with our Pro Plan, or it can be added to the Starter Plan for an additional $50. Prices and times will vary by state, but if you purchase this option, we can usually get things processed within 1 to 2 weeks.
  • Rush – If you’re really in a hurry, you can opt for our Rush service, which can usually get everything done in 3 to 5 business days. Again, though, it depends on your state. This option is included in our Premium Plan, or it can be added to the Starter or Pro Plan for an additional $100.

If you check out our state map again, you’ll see that we list the cost of the different processing speeds available for each state.

Returning the Evidence…Fast

You’re probably going to be eager to get the news that your LLC is official. So, rather than wait for the post office to deliver your confirmation papers, you can get it from us digitally. Not only is this fast, but having all that info in digital form means that you don’t have to worry about losing your paperwork; it won’t get bent, broken, or burned. You’ll have online access to your documents 24 hours a day through the ZenBusiness dashboard on your computer, meaning it will be right at your fingertips when it’s time to file your yearly reports, open new accounts, or do your taxes.

You may recall that we gave you some very specific advice at the beginning of this article as to when you should start your LLC: NOW. You can do it now because we’re right here to help you on every step of the way. Procrastination is a common vice, but one that’s easier to overcome with the help of a friend—especially a friend who knows how to get things done not only quickly, but also correctly.
