Cancellation cannot be completed online because the service involves a legal role tied to your state’s public records. Our team will verify your current status, confirm your cancellation path, and finalize the cancellation once your state records reflect the change.

Our team confirms whether your Registered Agent Service is active and whether the cancellation path you’ve chosen has been completed on your state’s records.
Depending on your path, you’ll update your state records to reflect a new registered agent or your own listing, or your business dissolution, then send us proof that your state records have been updated.
Once we have that proof, your Registered Agent Service is terminated. You’ll receive confirmation that your service has been canceled.
A Note on Your Other ZenBusiness Services
Canceling your Registered Agent Service is separate from canceling other ZenBusiness products. If you have additional services like Worry-Free Compliance or Money Pro Bookkeeping, those are managed independently. Our support team can help clarify what’s included in your account.
Your Registered Agent Service stays active throughout the cancellation process. Until your state records are updated and confirmed, ZenBusiness continues to receive Secretary of State notices and service of process on your behalf. That includes anything time-sensitive that arrives while your cancellation is in progress.
ZenBusiness Registered Agent Service cannot be canceled through your online account because it involves a legal role tied to your state’s public records. State records have to reflect the change before cancellation can be finalized, which is why our team verifies the update before closing out your service.
Registered Agent Service isn’t a software subscription. It’s a legal role. While ZenBusiness is listed as your registered agent with the Secretary of State, we’re legally required to receive Secretary of State notices and service of process on your behalf.
What “service of process” means in practice: if your business is ever named in a legal matter, official legal documents — such as lawsuit filings, wage garnishments, or subpoenas for records — are delivered to your registered agent, as they are the legally designated recipient. That’s us, until state records say otherwise. We can’t simply switch that off without confirming the handoff is complete on the state’s end. That’s why this takes a few steps instead of a single click.
Cancellation is complete only when your state records reflect a new registered agent. If your business has been dissolved, our support team will verify this before processing your cancellation. Until that’s confirmed, your Registered Agent Service stays active and we continue handling any Secretary of State notices and service of process that come in on your behalf.

We receive Secretary of State notices and service of process on your behalf, and ensure those documents are handled and forwarded to you promptly. Acting as your own registered agent is free but comes with important responsibilities and risks worth understanding before you decide.

Privacy
Our address appears on public records in place of your business address for registered agent purposes. However, your address may still appear on Secretary of State filings such as principal or mailing address. This varies by state.

Availability
We're available during required business hours so you don't have to be.
If you list a home address, process servers can attempt to serve you at any time, including evenings and weekends. There are no time restrictions on when service of process can be attempted.
Legal Mail
We receive and forward Secretary of State notices and service of process to your dashboard. Documents outside that scope, such as tax notices, bank mail, or license renewals, are returned to the sender.
You handle all incoming mail, including sorting legal notices from junk.
Risk
We make sure nothing gets missed.
Missing a state notice could result in penalties or loss of good standing, though some states send notices directly to the business rather than the registered agent.
