If you’re looking to start a registered business, then you might be considering using a business formation service like LegalZoom or MyCorporation. These business formation companies (and other companies like them) can be very helpful if you feel overwhelmed by all the business paperwork you’re facing.

But in the MyCorporation vs. LegalZoom matchup, who comes out on top? Are there any alternatives you should consider instead? In this guide, we’ll review both LegalZoom and MyCorporation, comparing how these two options compete in terms of value, customer service, customer reviews, and more.

Let’s get started.

About MyCorporation and LegalZoom

On the surface, MyCorporation and LegalZoom seem to be really similar: both companies can help you form and manage a business. But each company has its own unique pros, cons, and company history.

MyCorporation is based out of Calabasas, California, and they offer a variety of business formation services and maintenance services. Since their founding in 1998, they’ve helped to form over one million businesses.

Meanwhile, LegalZoom is just a little younger. The brand got its start in 2001, originally offering a small library of services to help form limited liability companies (LLCs) or assist individuals with writing wills and testaments. Over time, they expanded their service library to cover legal services for both business and personal needs. Since their founding, they’ve helped provide personal and business legal services for over 9 million customers.

Key Facts About LegalZoom and MyCorporation

LegalZoom and MyCorporation have a fair bit of common ground as two reputable companies in the business formation and legal services sector. We’ll dive into these distinctions throughout this guide, but here’s a quick glance at these companies.

MyCorporation

  • Long history of service in the business formation industry
  • Offers a variety of business services and compliance help
  • Not accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB)

LegalZoom

  • Huge volume of customers (over 9 million served)
  • Service offerings include a mix of business and personal legal services
  • Offers a free LLC formation package (plus state fees), but other fully-featured packages and other services fall on the pricier side

MyCorporation vs. LegalZoom: Our Full Review

In our assessment of LegalZoom and MyCorporation, we evaluated each company on the basis of several different categories: business formation services, registered agent service, additional service offerings, customer feedback, and customer reviews.

Let’s take a closer look at those categories.

Business Formation Services

Both LegalZoom and MyCorporation can help you form a limited liability company, corporation, or nonprofit. But what will it cost you?

Ultimately, it depends on what package you pick; both LegalZoom and MyCorporation offer their LLC formation services in different package tiers. You’ll have to pick the package that best suits your needs and budget.

To start, here are the LLC packages offered by LegalZoom:

  • Basic ($0 plus state fees): LegalZoom checks if your name is available and then files your Articles of Organization on your behalf. You’ll also get a free tax consultation.
  • Pro ($249 plus state fees): You get everything in the basic package, plus an operating agreement and EIN. You’ll also get access to a library of customizable legal templates (for one year) and a free 30-day trial to LegalZoom’s legal assistance subscription, which lets you have 30-minute consultations with an attorney in your state.
  • Premium ($299 plus state fees): You get everything in the pro package, plus several tools to help with bookkeeping, expense tracking, and invoicing.

If you’re interested in forming a corporation instead, LegalZoom’s corporation packages start at $149.

Here’s a look at the costs for MyCorporation’s LLC formation packages:

  • Basic ($109 plus state fees): MyCorporation checks your business name and files your formation documents (typically the Articles of Organization) on your behalf. You also get a few sample business documents (but not as many as higher service tiers). You also gain access to MyCorp Vault document storage.
  • Standard ($134 plus state fees): You get everything in the Basic package, plus more business documents and annual report service (which you’ll be subscribed to auto-renewal for).
  • Deluxe ($234 plus state fees): This includes everything in Standard, plus a year of registered agent service (you’ll be subscribed to auto-renewal for this service, too).
  • Premium ($334 plus state fees): You’ll receive everything included in the MyCorporation Deluxe package, plus a year of MaintainMyBiz, a service that helps you with up to four business filings a year at no extra cost. This service auto-renews.

MyCorporation charges similar prices for incorporation packages for a C corporation; there are also shipping charges on top of these package prices. You’ll see those charges reflected in the order form.

It’s hard to argue with LegalZoom’s free LLC formation package (plus state fees). That’s why we offer the same deal here at ZenBusiness: you just pay state filing fees, and we’ll create your LLC for you.

Registered Agent Services

All businesses have to designate a registered agent — an individual or business that will accept service of process and other important state communications on behalf of the business. Technically, you can serve as your own registered agent, but only if you meet the criteria: you’re a resident of the state, you have a physical address, and you’re present at that address during normal business hours.

For most entrepreneurs, those criteria are too restrictive, so they opt for a registered agent service instead. Both LegalZoom and MyCorporation offer these services.

If you hire LegalZoom as your registered agent, you’ll pay $249 per year. You can purchase registered agent service as a standalone service or add it onto your LLC formation. Meanwhile, MyCorporation charges $120 for the first year of registered agent service, and the service renews at $249 per year. Agent service is included in the Deluxe and Premium packages (for one year).

MyCorporation’s registered agent service is cheaper for the first year (especially if you use one of their upper-tier LLC packages), but after the first year, these services have an identical price point.

Additional Services

Are you looking for other services to keep your business running smoothly? If you’d like to get a variety of services all in one place, then you’re in luck — both LegalZoom and MyCorporation offer a variety of services beyond formations and registered agent service. We won’t list every single service offered by each of these brands (this guide would be far too long if we did), but we can give you an idea of the services available.

LegalZoom is one of just a few companies that offer legal services for both personal and business needs. For example, if you needed help getting a will, setting up a trust, navigating divorce proceedings, or setting up power of attorney, LegalZoom’s personal services department could help. But if you needed help with your business, LegalZoom could assist with filing your annual report, researching what licenses and permits you need, handling intellectual property services like getting a trademark, and more. LegalZoom also has attorney services available through a subscription, where you can have thirty-minute consultations with an attorney in your state.

Meanwhile, MyCorporation keeps its offerings tailored to businesses. The brand can help with a variety of business compliance tasks, including a managed annual report service, amendment filings, foreign qualifications, EIN applications, and more. They also offer a business license compliance package; they’ll research what licenses and permits your business needs and guide you to the forms that you need. Some entrepreneurs might also be intrigued by MyCorporation’s unemployment insurance and payroll services; not all service websites help with this, so it’s an intriguing perk.

Customer Feedback

When we’re assessing these online service companies, we like to look at third-party review sites like Trustpilot or the Better Business Bureau; we find that these are great sources to get an unbiased view at what customers are saying. So we took a look at some of the reviews for MyCorporation and LegalZoom.

We were surprised to see that MyCorporation doesn’t have a ton of reviews on Trustpilot. Even though they’ve been around for over 25 years, they’ve only collected 279 reviews (as of this writing). Their feedback is a bit of a mixed bag, too: their average score is 3.7 out of 5 stars. Many customers mention helpful customer service representatives, but others complain about poor support, slow processing speeds, and other problems.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that MyCorporation is not BBB accredited. If you value BBB accreditation, you’ll want to look elsewhere.

Meanwhile, LegalZoom has a very strong showing on Trustpilot. As of this writing, they’ve got more than 23,000 reviews on Trustpilot. And generally speaking, customers have a good experience with the brand: they’ve got a 4.6/5 star average score. Positive customer reviews typically mention an easy time navigating the LLC setup process and personalized customer support when help was needed. That said, some reviewers complain that their support reps weren’t helpful when they needed to cancel a service (with some complaining that they unknowingly opted into certain services).

Customer Support

Somewhere along the way, there’s a good chance that you’ll need assistance with your business — maybe you have a question about billing, or you have a question about one of your business filings. If that happens, you want to know you’ll get the support you need quickly (and from a kind, helpful representative).

LegalZoom provides support via live chat or phone, and their support teams are available from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. PT on weekdays or 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT on weekends. It’s also nice that two of the phone numbers listed on their site (there are three total) are dedicated to sales and customer support. When we tested their chat feature recently, we got a prompt and helpful answer to our question within ten minutes.

Most customer reviews also mention a positive experience with LegalZoom’s support team. There is a little room for improvement, especially when it comes to sorting out issues with unwanted subscriptions, but all told, people appreciate the support they receive from the brand.

MyCorporation offers customer support by live chat, phone, and a Contact Us form on their website. Their posted support hours run from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. PT on weekdays only. Interestingly, when we tried to reach out to their Live Chat channel during those hours, we got a message that their support was closed (this has happened to us more than once, too, so we’re wondering if their live chat is truly an option or just an old feature they haven’t deleted). We also waited a while to get an answer to our contact form request. We’ve had better luck with phone support, though.

A good number of customer reviews mention a positive experience with customer support, but some customers had trouble getting the assistance they needed.

Which LLC formation service is best?

Both MyCorporation and LegalZoom are two popular LLC formation services that can help you form and maintain a business, but are these brands the right choice for your business? You might find yourself drawn to either brand’s long history in the industry or LegalZoom’s free LLC services (plus state fees).

But if LegalZoom’s upsells or MyCorporation’s mixed customer feedback has you looking into alternatives, check out ZenBusiness. We’re proud to offer our customers the best value and service. Like LegalZoom, we’ll form your LLC for free (plus state filing fees). But we can also provide you with registered agent service at a great value ($99 for your first year and $199/year afterwards). Frequently Asked Questions About LegalZoom and MyCorporation

  • LegalZoom, one of the most well-known services online, has formed more than 2 million businesses since 2001. Check out the comparison reviews below if you’d like to see how this giant stacks up to other LLC websites.

    LegalZoom compared to:

  • Neither LegalZoom nor MyCorporation offers publication services for states like New York, which require you to publish a notice about your new business in certain publications to alert the public about your entity. It’s a shame that these brands don’t offer these essential services.

If you need help with NY publication requirements, check out our New York publication service for more information.

  • MyCorporation keeps the upsells to a minimum, although they do offer some (primarily as add-ons on the package selection screen). LegalZoom offers a few more upsells for extra services, especially if you use the free LLC package (plus state fees).

With either service, you’ll need to carefully read the terms and conditions of every service or free trial you opt into. That will help you avoid surprise charges when renewals come around.

  • MyCorporation promises they’ll do what they can to make things right if you aren’t satisfied. But if you’re still not happy, you can get a refund if you meet certain criteria. Specifically, you must request a refund within 60 days of MyCorporation beginning work on your services.

Meanwhile, LegalZoom offers a 100% satisfaction guarantee that states you can request a refund at any time within 60 days of your initial purchase. It’s nearly identical to the ZenBusiness refund policy and one of the most reasonable in the industry.

  • LegalZoom processes most forms within 5-14 business days, but you can expedite processing to cut that to a one-day turnaround. Meanwhile, MyCorporation doesn’t explicitly state its processing times, but they do say that online filings typically take between 24 and 48 hours, while mail-order forms can range between 2 and 14 business days. MyCorporation does allow you to upgrade to expedited service, which they say cuts processing time by up to 85%.

  • You absolutely can form an LLC on your own. Using LLC services can be really helpful, though. Services like ZenBusiness, LegalZoom, and MyCorporation can all take some of the paperwork off your plate. These services can also help you navigate your state’s business compliance rules and regulations, which might be trickier than you expect.

  • LegalZoom’s offering of a free (plus state fees) LLC formation service is an advantage over some competitors. MyCorporation offers some financial services that most competitors don’t offer as optional add-ons to LLC formation. For example, they can provide assistance with income tax and unemployment insurance for your employees. Not all businesses need these, of course, but it can be nice to have the option.

  • If you’re looking for assistance with maintaining your good standing with the state into the future, either of these companies can help. LegalZoom offers registered agent service for $249 per year, and they also have annual report service available for $99.

MyCorporation offers a few different compliance services, including registered agent service for $249 per year ($120 the first year) and annual report filing for $134 plus state fees. They also offer MaintainMyBiz for an annual fee of $250, which helps you with up to four business filings per year.
