Consistent Twitter Presence

If you’ve set up a Twitter account, but haven’t done anything with it, or only post once and a while, it’s not going to work. You must post every day if you want to make any impression on the network. People will start to recognize your profile picture and posts, which is part of your brand. The more often you post, the more people will recognize you.

Avoid Over-Posting

You need to be present on the social network, but avoid posting too much. Some people tweet every two to five minutes – this is too much. You will lose followers quickly this way. You should post about two or three times a day. There may be days you post more, and others less and that is okay. Just don’t fill up people’s Twitter feed with your posts.

Pick the Right Times

Your consumers have a certain time they use Twitter. Test out different times to figure out when they are using Twitter. Good signs your audience is most available are when your posts are getting likes, comments, and RTs. You can also spy on your competitors to see when they are posting and how much engagement they receive on different types of posts published during different times of the day.

Use Hashtags

Hashtags are important because it helps people find your posts. When people are looking for information on a product or service, they will search for it using Twitter’s search engine. The hashtag brings attention to the search term, which makes it visible to people. Do some research on the most used hashtags for your products and services to find out which ones you should use.

Research finds that using more than two hashtags in one post decrease RTs. Try to keep it at two, so you don’t lose any engagement. 

Utilize @Influencer

It’s a good idea to gain the attention of influencers because they may RT your posts, which will put you in front of their followers. You do this simply by using @InfluencerName. The only people that see this are people who follow both you and the influencer. Now, if you want everyone to see what you’re saying to that person, be sure to put a period before @. For example, you should type ‘.@Influencer’.

Retweet People’s Posts

People want you to RT their posts. Do it to be nice, but also make sure it’s going to be applicable to your audience. If you don’t, you may end up losing followers. You can always like and comment on posts that may not be of interest to your audience. This will at least show them you are trying to be nice and help them gain attention.

Follow the 80/20 Rule

Eighty percent of your posts should be informational or entertaining, and the other 20 percent should be self-promoting. It’s important to follow this rule because if you market yourself too much, people will get tired of it and unfollow you.

Thank People for RTs

When people RT your posts, it’s good to acknowledge and thank them. You can do this simply by replying to the mention or publishing a post using the @UserName.

Use Twitter’s Search Engine to Find Consumers

You can check on what your consumers are talking about by searching for keywords you think they may be using. For example, if you’re selling plants, you may want to search for ‘garden.’ Results will show you all of the people tweeting about gardens. You can then engage with those people by liking their tweets, replying to them, and for some of them, you can RT. When you engage with these people, they will likely want to know who you are and may even end up going to your site to see what you offer.

Create Lists

Your Twitter following can get out of control quickly. To gain control over all of the people you follow, create lists. These are just categories within Twitter. You can then assign each person to a list (category).

When you want to see posts from only a certain group, all you have to do is click on that list. It makes using Twitter much easier.

Vary Your Posts

People don’t want to see the same types of posts from you all of the time. You should rotate the types of tweets you publish. The types of tweets you can publish are:

  • Images
  • Text
  • Links
  • Quotes

Images are popular on Twitter, so be sure to use them often. Text provides information and usually incorporates hashtags. Links take people to your site or someone else’s depending on the link, so think about this when you publish these. Quotes are personal and emotional, which can capture the attention of your audience. Using quotation marks will make the quote stand out on your feed.

Use Twitter Analytics to Refine Your Twitter Marketing Strategy

Twitter Analytics are available, so use them. It will tell you the engagement on your posts. This way you can see if there are certain tweets that your audience likes better. When you know that, you can try to come up with more that are similar to give your consumers exactly what they want on Twitter.
