If you’re looking to start a registered business, then you might be considering using a business formation service like Rocket Lawyer or LegalZoom. These business formation companies (and other companies like them) can be very helpful if you feel overwhelmed by all the business paperwork you’re facing.

But in the Rocket Lawyer vs. LegalZoom matchup, who comes out on top? Are there any alternatives you should consider instead? In this guide, we’ll review both Rocket Lawyer and LegalZoom, comparing how these two options compete in terms of value, customer service, customer reviews, and more.

Let’s get started.

About LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer

On the surface, LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer seem to be really similar: both companies are online legal service businesses that can help you form and manage a business. But each company has its own unique pros, cons, and company history.

LegalZoom was founded in 2001 with a small library of services, including LLC formation services and helping individuals write wills and testaments. Over the years, they’ve expanded their service offerings to cover a variety of legal services for both personal and business applications. Since 2001, they’ve helped people sort out more than 9 million legal needs.

Rocket Laywer also offers legal solutions for both business and personal needs. Since its founding in 2008, Rocket Lawyer has helped over 20 million people with different legal needs, including forming businesses, drafting legal documents like lease agreements, contracts, and more.

Key Facts About LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer

Rocket Lawyer and LegalZoom have a fair bit of common ground as two established companies in the business formation and legal services sector. We’ll dive into the distinctions between these brands throughout this guide, but here’s a quick glance at these companies.

LegalZoom

  • Huge volume of customers (over 9 million served)
  • Service offerings include a mix of business and personal legal services
  • Offers a free LLC formation package (plus state fees), but other fully-featured packages and other services fall on the pricier side

Rocket Lawyer

  • Offers a wide library of legal forms and business services through subscription services or standalone products
  • Strong history of customer reviews
  • Service offerings include a mix of business and personal legal documents

Rocket Lawyer vs. LegalZoom: Our Full Review

In our assessment of Rocket Lawyer and LegalZoom, we evaluated several different categories: each company’s LLC formation service, registered agent service, other services, customer feedback, and customer support.

Let’s dive in.

Business Formation Services

Both LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer can help you start an LLC, nonprofit, or corporation. But how much will it cost you, and what’s included in your formation package?

Interestingly, LegalZoom actually offers a free LLC formation package (plus state filing fees). It’s a pretty basic package, but you can upgrade if you need more services. Here’s a quick look at LegalZoom’s LLC formation packages:

  • Basic ($0 plus state fees): LegalZoom checks if your name is available and then files your Articles of Organization on your behalf. You’ll also get a free tax consultation.
  • Pro ($249 plus state fees): You get everything in the basic package, plus an operating agreement and EIN. You’ll also get access to a library of customizable legal templates (for one year) and a free 30-day trial to LegalZoom’s legal assistance subscription, which lets you have 30-minute consultations with an attorney in your state.
  • Premium ($299 plus state fees): You get everything in the pro package, plus several tools to help with bookkeeping, expense tracking, and invoicing.

If you’re interested in forming a corporation, LegalZoom’s corporation packages start at $149 (plus state fees).

Rocket Lawyer takes a slightly different approach to business formations, as they don’t offer a list of packages to choose from. Plus, the cost to hire them will vary depending on whether you’re a Rocket Legal Plus subscriber or not. If you aren’t a member of their subscription service, you’ll pay $99 (plus state fees) for Rocket Lawyer to form an LLC on your behalf. But if you are a member of Rocket Legal Plus, you’ll get your first business registration at no extra cost (just pay state fees); you’d also get 50% off any subsequent registrations.

Rocket Lawyer charges the same amount ($99) for forming a corporation.

Registered Agent Services

If needed, you can hire either LegalZoom or Rocket Lawyer to serve as your registered agent. In some cases, you can serve as your own agent, but you have to meet state criteria. Usually, that means you’re a resident of your state with a physical address (not just a P.O. box), and you’re present at that address during all normal business hours. For most small business owners, that’s not a viable option. Hiring a registered agent service like Rocket Lawyer, LegalZoom, or ZenBusiness is an easier option.

LegalZoom charges $249 annually for its registered agent service. Rocket Lawyer has a base fee of $249 per year for registered agent service, but you’ll get 50% off that price if you’re a Rocket Legal Plus member. All told, these brands have a very similar registered agent service; it’s higher than many competitors in this sector (excluding the price for Rocket Lawyer’s subscription members).

Additional Service Offerings

Both LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer have a large library of services that meet both business and personal needs; many competitors only offer business legal services. Their exact services vary, though, and so does their approach to pricing for those services.

So far in this guide, we’ve made a few mentions of Rocket Lawyer’s Rocket Legal Plus membership; this subscription model product is one of their primary offerings. If you subscribe to Rocket Legal Plus, you get free and quick answers to straightforward tax or legal questions. You’ll even gain unlimited access to Rocket Lawyer’s document library of customizable forms, including LLC operating agreements, contract templates, lease agreements, and more. Online signatures for these forms are included, too. You’ll also get 50% off Rocket Lawyer’s Pro services, such as registered agent service, legal consultations for more challenging law questions, tax help, and intellectual property services. Pro services usually range between $149 to $699 per consult, so a 50% discount with Rocket Legal Plus could have your subscription paying for itself quickly.

Rocket Legal Plus currently costs $239.88 per year. Rocket Lawyer also offers a simpler subscription, Rocket Legal, for $39.99 a month, which removes the 50% discount for Pro services but still gives you quick answers to simple legal and tax questions and access to the Rocket Lawyer document library. With either subscription, Rocket Lawyer offers a free 7-day trial.

LegalZoom offers a variety of other legal services for business and personal applications. For businesses, they provide help researching business licenses, annual report services, operating agreements, getting an EIN, dissolving your company, applying for a trademark, and more. For personal legal needs, LegalZoom assists with trusts, living wills, divorce proceedings, power of attorney, and more. LegalZoom also offers online legal services from an attorney if you need more customized support. Some of these services are quite affordable, but others carry a hefty price tag.

Both Rocket Lawyer and LegalZoom have services to meet a variety of needs. However, pricing varies. You might get a fair price for some offerings, but it’s not uncommon to spend several hundred dollars for a service from either brand.

Customer Reviews

We find that checking customer reviews on third-party review sites like Trustpilot is a really helpful way to assess a company’s performance, so we checked out reviews for both companies.

LegalZoom has a lot of reviews on Trustpilot, and for the most part, they’re very positive. The brand has a 4.6/5 star average score across almost 23,000 reviews. The brand’s satisfied customers usually mention helpful customer support representatives and an easy business startup process on the site. Their negative reviews are in the minority, but reviewers with complaints mention having trouble getting customer support when trying to cancel services; a few even lamented that they’d unintentionally subscribed to services they didn’t want.

Rocket Lawyer has an identical average score of 4.6/5 stars on Trustpilot. They do have fewer reviews, but it’s still a healthy number (well over 9,000 at the time of this writing). While the two brands have the same average score, it’s worth noting that Rocket Lawyer has a lower percentage of 1-star reviews (4% compared to LegalZoom’s 9%), so a smaller percentage of customers have a poor experience with the brand.

In Rocket Lawyer’s positive reviews, reviewers often mention that they had an easy time creating legal documents at an affordable price, and the legal assistance from their consultation was helpful. Some negative reviews mention frustration with canceling after the free trial or higher costs than expected for services they thought would be included in the trial.

While there’s always room for improvement, these brands have a strong showing for customer reviews.

Customer Support

Nobody really wants to have to reach out to customer service, but when you do need help, you want reassurance that you’ll get answers to your questions quickly (and courteously). So we’ve taken the time to see how LegalZoom and Rocket Lawyer’s customer support stacks up.

Rocket Lawyer offers several different ways to reach out to customer service reps. You can reach out using the chat feature on their website, email them through the website’s contact form, or call them at the number listed on the website. Their availability runs from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. PT on Monday through Friday. It’s a little disappointing that they don’t have any support on weekends. If your business is a weekend side hustle, no weekend support is a bit annoying.

When we tested Rocket Lawyer’s customer support ourselves, we didn’t have too much trouble getting the answers we needed. When we sent a question through their online form, we got an answer within one business day. It wasn’t elaborate or detailed (or formatted very well, honestly), but it did get our questions answered. However, customer reviews do mention that customer support can be a little lacking when it comes to canceling subscriptions and addressing billing issues.

Meanwhile, you can get support from LegalZoom through live chat. If you prefer just a phone call, you can use one of the three phone numbers listed on their website (two of those are lines dedicated to sales and customer care). You can reach their support team from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. PT on weekdays or 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekends. When we tested their chat support, we had a clear answer to our question in less than ten minutes.

Most of LegalZoom’s customer reviews mention that people had a positive experience with customer support; some reviewers even mention their customer service rep by name in their review. A few reviewers said they had trouble getting help if their order got delayed or when they needed to cancel a service. Thankfully, these reviews aren’t commonplace.

Which is the best LLC service for you?

Rocket Lawyer and LegalZoom are two popular LLC formation services, and they have a good number of things in common. If you want a free LLC (just pay state fees), then LegalZoom’s basic package might be appealing, but be aware that LegalZoom offers a lot of upsells during the process, so you might end up spending more than state fees alone.

Meanwhile, you might be drawn to Rocket Lawyer’s subscription model if you want a variety of business legal documents customized for your company and access to legal professionals at a discount.

But with both brands, you’ll find it’s easy to spend a lot of money, which might have you looking into other options. If that’s the case, check out ZenBusiness. We’re proud to offer our customers the best value and service. To start, we’ll form your LLC for free (plus state filing fees). Frequently Asked Questions About Rocket Lawyer and LegalZoom

While they don’t have these services listed anywhere on their website, when we called Rocket Lawyer’s customer support team, we learned that they do offer to handle state-specific compliance requirements like publication. We’ll note that their publication service is pretty costly, though. They charge $299, and this price point doesn’t include newspaper expenses or county fees. Meanwhile, LegalZoom offers no assistance with publication requirements.

If you need help with NY publication requirements, check out our New York publication service for more information.

LegalZoom compared to:

Rocket Lawyer doesn’t attempt upsells in the traditional sense, but that’s because their primary business model is their subscription plan. So when you use their site, you’ll see frequent reminders to sign up for their subscription instead of extra “products” that you can opt into. Meanwhile, LegalZoom offers a good number of upsells as you work your way through their order form, especially if you use their basic LLC formation package.

With either brand, you’ll need to carefully read the terms and conditions of any products or subscriptions you opt into. That will help you avoid unwanted charges.

Rocket Lawyer’s refund policy is a bit confusing at first glance, but here’s the gist: They’ll refund money for billing issues or if there was a problem with the delivery of a service you purchased. But if you have already used the service — such as an LLC formation or incorporation service — you won’t be eligible for a refund. If you qualify for a refund, you must request it within 30 days of purchase.

LegalZoom, however, has a satisfaction guarantee that states you can request a refund at any time within 60 days of your initial purchase. It’s nearly identical to the ZenBusiness refund policy and one of the most reasonable in the industry.

Rocket Lawyer bases their turnaround times on state filing speeds, so they don’t explicitly promise how quickly they’ll process your LLC or corporation paperwork. With LegalZoom, standard processing takes 5-14 business days. You can upgrade to expedited processing (one-day turnaround) if you wish.

You absolutely can form an LLC on your own. Using a business formation service can be really helpful, though. Services like ZenBusiness, LegalZoom, and Rocket Lawyer can all take some of the paperwork off your plate. These services can also help you navigate your state’s business compliance rules and regulations, which might be trickier than you expect.

Rocket Lawyer won’t be the right fit for everyone, but their legal subscription service could be a very valuable offering for certain small business owners. Meanwhile, LegalZoom’s primary draw is the free LLC formation package (plus state fees).

LegalZoom offers registered agent service for $249 per year, and they also have annual report service available for $99.

You can purchase Rocket Lawyer’s registered agent service for $249.99 per year (50% off if you subscribe to Rocket Legal Plus), but they don’t offer annual report service, so their level of assistance with ongoing compliance requirements is less impressive.
