Vonage Business Phone Service Review

Vonage is an outstanding option for any local business seeking affordable phone service. Let’s quickly run down some of its pros and cons before we take a deeper dive.

Pros

  • Affordable base-rate package
  • 30% discount for new customers
  • Unlimited texting

Cons

  • Many common features cost extra
  • Higher tier packages don’t add enough value

The Details of Vonage Business Phone Service

Vonage has three different tiers of business phone service, each with varying price points based on how many users you have on the plan. Vonage Mobile costs $19.99/month for 1-4 users, while its Premium package costs $29.99 and the Advanced plan has a $39.99 monthly price point.

All plans include unlimited calling and texting, as well as 24/7 customer support access. Beyond that, the included features vary based on which level of service you purchase.

Overall Pricing and Value:

How much value you get out of Vonage’s business phone services largely depends on what you need from the system. The base-rate Mobile plan is a rather barebones service, but not all businesses need advanced features from their phone service.

While the Mobile package only includes mobile apps, the Premium level adds compatibility with desk phones, along with a multi-level auto attendant and app integrations with several major companies. The top-tier Advanced package includes group calling, call recording, and visual voicemail.

Considering that some competitors offer these features in their base-rate packages, we’re not terribly impressed with Vonage’s upper-tier plans, especially considering that none of them include toll-free numbers. Overall, Vonage Mobile is a very affordable package for small businesses seeking no-frills phone services, but we think you can do better than its Premium or Advanced plans.

Track Record:

Vonage was founded in 2001 and has since grown into one of the most popular business phone service providers in the industry. The company has a whopping 1.1 million subscribers, a volume of customers that most competitors can only dream of.

Vonage has a bit of a mixed reputation for customer feedback. It receives outstanding reviews on both Google Play and the Apple App Store, with an average rating of roughly 4.6/5 among thousands of reviews, indicating that customers love Vonage’s convenient mobile apps.

That said, the company maintains a much less impressive average rating score of around 3.6/5 on various third-party review aggregator websites.

Customer Support:

While Vonage does not offer 24/7 support as some of its competitors do, this company still has broad customer service availability with long hours. Business customers can contact Vonage’s customer support team from 8 am to midnight ET on weekdays and 9 am to 9 pm ET on weekends. The company also indicates that it has “emergency on-call after-hours support” but includes very little information about what this means or how one could access it.

While we have always experienced solid customer support from Vonage, there is a trend in the company’s reviews in which people discuss their frustrations with the inconsistency of said support. It doesn’t appear to be a terribly widespread issue, but we will dock Vonage a couple of points for it.

Ease of Use:

There wouldn’t be much point in using a business phone service if it didn’t make it cheaper and easier to communicate with your customers and vendors. Thankfully, Vonage does just that, with an easy-to-use interface and intuitive features.

Vonage is one of the most reliable VoIP services, as it has very little downtime. In addition, the service is presented in an easily understood manner with intuitive directions. Overall, this category is one where Vonage gets to flex its muscles.

What Are Customers Saying About Vonage Business Phone Service?

How customers feel about Vonage tends to vary depending on where you look for feedback. Customers usually love Vonage’s mobile apps, which explains the company’s excellent average rating scores on Google Play and the Apple App Store. With nearly 16,000 reviews available for the Vonage Business Communications app, and an average rating score of roughly 4.6 out of 5, it’s clear that Vonage hits a home run with its apps.

However, when you dig beyond the mobile apps, you’ll likely find some areas where Vonage’s business phone service customers aren’t quite as impressed. We found more than 2,000 unique reviews for Vonage on various third-party review aggregator websites, with an average of 3.6/5.

While this company clearly still has plenty of satisfied customers, we found a fair share of customers with complaints about inconsistent customer service and the way Vonage charges extra for features many competitors include for free.

Our Final Thoughts

Vonage is an outstanding option for local companies that don’t need toll-free numbers. We also appreciate this company’s highly experienced track record and intuitive mobile apps.

We think Vonage is a great company in many ways, and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to our family and friends. However, we recognize that Vonage won’t be the perfect choice for every entrepreneur’s business phone service needs.
