If you’re looking to start a registered business, then you might be considering using a business formation service like Tailor Brands or LegalZoom. These LLC formation services (and other companies like them) can be very helpful if you feel overwhelmed by all the business paperwork you’re facing.
But in the Tailor Brands vs. LegalZoom matchup, who comes out on top? Are there any alternatives you should consider instead? In this guide, we’ll review both Tailor Brands and LegalZoom, comparing how these two options compete in terms of value, customer service, customer reviews, and more.
Let’s get started.
At first glance, LegalZoom and Tailor Brands appear quite similar — both assist with forming and managing businesses. However, each has distinct strengths, weaknesses, and company backgrounds.
LegalZoom entered the market in 2001, initially focusing on LLC formation and estate planning services like wills and testaments. Over the years, they’ve grown into one of the most recognized online legal service providers, offering support for both personal and business needs. To date, they’ve handled more than nine million legal matters.
Tailor Brands, on the other hand, launched in 2015 and takes a more design-focused approach. While they provide basic LLC formation services, their main appeal lies in branding tools such as logo creators, website builders, and graphic design features.
Tailor Brands and LegalZoom have a fair bit of common ground as two established companies in the business formation and legal services sector. We’ll dive into the key similarities and differences between them throughout this guide, but here’s a quick glance at these companies.
In our assessment of Tailor Brands and LegalZoom, we evaluated several different categories: each company’s LLC formation service, registered agent service, other services, customer feedback, and customer support.
Let’s dive in.
LegalZoom offers business formation services for LLCs and corporations, but Tailor Brands currently only offers LLC formations. For the sake of this guide, we’ll focus on LLC formation services. Both of these brands offer a few different packages to choose from.
For the sake of comparison, let’s take a look at the costs to start an LLC (just keep in mind that LegalZoom may have slightly different costs for corporation formations). Let’s start with LegalZoom’s offerings:
Next, here are the package offerings from Tailor Brands:
Every registered business needs a registered agent, and LegalZoom and Tailor Brands might be able to fill this role for you. Technically, you can serve as your own registered agent if you meet the criteria (you’re an individual resident of your state, and you have a physical office address that you’re present at during all normal business hours). But just because you can be your own agent doesn’t mean you should; hiring a registered agent can give you peace of mind, a more flexible schedule, and assurance that you’re complying with state requirements.
LegalZoom charges $249 per year for its registered agent service, and it can be added to a formation service or purchased separately. In contrast, Tailor Brands only offers registered agent services to those who use their LLC formation service. Their service costs $199 per year.
We won’t list every single service that LegalZoom and Tailor Brands provide, but here’s an overview of what each company brings to the table.
LegalZoom offers an extensive range of both business and personal legal services. For businesses, they assist with obtaining business licenses, filing annual reports, securing an EIN, drafting operating agreements, dissolving entities, registering trademarks, and handling other intellectual property needs. On the personal side, they provide help with trusts, living wills, divorce filings, powers of attorney, and more. Customers can also book attorney consultations for a wide range of legal issues. Additionally, LegalZoom partners with Bank of America to help customers open business bank accounts as part of their LLC formation process.
Tailor Brands also provides a mix of business-related tools, including EIN acquisition, business license research, sales tax permit assistance, and access to a Bluevine business banking partnership. However, their standout offerings center on marketing and brand development. Their platform helps users create professional logos, build websites, design branded merchandise, and access other creative resources.
While both companies cover a broad range of services, their priorities differ. LegalZoom specializes in legal and compliance tasks that involve government filings, whereas Tailor Brands focuses on branding and marketing tools to help businesses build their visual identity.
Checking third-party review sites like Trustpilot and the Better Business Bureau (BBB) is one of the best ways to gauge a company’s reputation, so we reviewed feedback for both LegalZoom and Tailor Brands.
Tailor Brands has around 9,900 reviews on Trustpilot, with a solid 4.3 out of 5 average rating. Many customers praise the platform’s ease of use and quick setup process. However, about 15% of reviews (as of December 2025) are one-star ratings. Negative feedback often cites unexpected charges, trouble canceling subscriptions, and higher-than-expected pricing. A few users also reported poor customer service experiences, including one particularly harsh review about being insulted by a representative. These complaints make up a smaller portion of reviews but are still worth considering. Notably, Tailor Brands doesn’t appear to have a BBB profile.
LegalZoom, by comparison, has nearly 25,900 Trustpilot reviews with an average rating of 4.6 out of 5 stars and maintains BBB accreditation with an A+ rating. Positive reviews frequently highlight the company’s knowledgeable customer service team and straightforward formation process. On the other hand, some customers report being signed up for unwanted services or facing difficulties reaching support when attempting to cancel.
Customer support plays a big role in the overall experience — when something goes wrong or you have a question about your order, quick and reliable help can make all the difference.
LegalZoom provides several ways to reach its customer support team, including three phone numbers (two specifically for sales and customer care) and a live chat option on its website. When we tested their chat feature, we received a clear and accurate response within about ten minutes. LegalZoom’s support hours are 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. PT on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. PT on weekends. In customer reviews, their support staff often receives praise, with some customers even mentioning representatives by name. Still, a few reviews note frustration when dealing with delayed orders or trying to cancel services.
Tailor Brands offers support through email and a phone number listed on its website. They no longer publish their support hours on their website, so it’s tough to say when you can get support. Their phone line is an AI assistant line, which not all users find helpful. When we contacted them with a question, we did receive a helpful response, but it took more than a full business day.
Reviews of Tailor Brands’ customer service are mixed: while some users describe positive experiences, many one-star reviews mention issues such as automated phone responses, difficulty canceling subscriptions, or trouble obtaining refunds for unwanted charges.
Both companies provide decent support options, but LegalZoom appears to have a slight edge when it comes to responsiveness and overall customer satisfaction.
LegalZoom and Tailor Brands are both viable options for forming an LLC, but each brand has pros and cons. And they might not be the right choice for your business.
You might find Tailor Brands appealing if you need help with marketing materials and branding. But their mixed customer feedback is a drawback, and you’ll need to pick another option if you want to form a corporation. Meanwhile, LegalZoom might appeal to you if you want to work with a single brand to cover legal needs for both business and personal purposes. But their higher prices might make you hesitate a bit.
Because of these drawbacks, you might find yourself looking into alternatives. Here at ZenBusiness, we’re proud to offer our customers excellent value on a variety of services. Like LegalZoom and Tailor Brands, we’ll form your LLC for free (plus state filing fees). We’ll also help you get registered agent service at a great value. Plus, our customer feedback is excellent: out of 25,856 Trustpilot reviews, we’ve got a 4.8/5 average score. We pride ourselves on providing superior customer service whenever you need it.
Here at ZenBusiness, we pride ourselves on providing reliable services for a variety of small business needs at a great value. Whether you need registered agent service for a good price, help starting your LLC, a Money Pro app for managing your business finances, or something else, we’ve got your back. We’ll help handle the red tape for you so you can focus on what you love: running your business.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tailor Brands vs LegalZoom
We think LegalZoom’s Basic plan for $0 (+ state fee) is a solid choice. While it doesn’t include many advanced features, it’s still hard to complain about getting your LLC formed for free (plus any state fees).
LegalZoom doesn’t help with this process, and Tailor Brands doesn’t offer New York publication service, either. It’s unfortunate, especially when some competitors (like us at ZenBusiness) offer formation services along with state-specific compliance requirements like publication (see ZenBusiness customer reviews). Check out our New York publication service for more information.
Both brands offer a decent number of upsells throughout the LLC formation process, especially if you use their free LLC packages. With either service, be sure to carefully read the terms and conditions of every service you opt into so you aren’t surprised by unexpected fees.
Tailor Brands doesn’t have a customer-friendly refund policy. In fact, it’s quite strict: “To the maximum extent permitted by law and unless otherwise specified herein, all fees are non-refundable.” That’s a quote straight from their Terms of Service page. If they do decide to give you a refund, they’ll deduct a $29 service fee from the refund amount.
On the other hand, LegalZoom has one of the industry’s best refund policies. They provide their customers with a satisfaction guarantee that says they will grant a refund to anyone requesting one for any reason within 60 days of their purchase. They don’t even have a convenience fee, which is the icing on the cake. It’s nearly identical to the refund policy we have at ZenBusiness.
LegalZoom, one of the most well-known services online, has formed more than 4 million businesses since 2001. They’re also a legal services provider. Check out the comparison reviews below if you’d like to see how this giant stacks up to other good LLC websites.
LegalZoom compared to:
Tailor Brands’ standard turnaround time for processing your paperwork and submitting it to the state is approximately 14 business days. If you purchase their expedited filing service or get a package that includes it, it’s only two business days.
Meanwhile, LegalZoom usually takes 5 to 14 days to process your order and submit it to the state, but if you pay $99 for rush processing, your paperwork can be submitted in as little as one business day.
You absolutely can form an LLC on your own. Using a business formation service can be really helpful, though. Services like ZenBusiness, LegalZoom, and Tailor Brands can all take some of the paperwork off your plate. Business services can also help you navigate your state’s unique rules and regulations, which might be trickier than you expect.
In our opinion, Tailor Brands’ offering of several helpful branding tools is an advantage over many competitors. As for LegalZoom, it has a slightly better customer feedback reputation than Tailor Brands, with thousands of positive reviews available online and only a small handful of critical feedback.
Tailor Brands offers registered agent service and annual reports for $199 each per year. It’s worth noting that you can currently only purchase registered agent service from Tailor Brands if you add it to your LLC formation service. With LegalZoom, you can get registered agent service for $249 per year, and their annual report service is available for $199 per year (plus state fees).
