How to Do an Alabama LLC Name Search
Before forming an LLC in Alabama, a unique business name has to be found. See how to find if the LLC name you want is available to register.
The Business Services Section of the Alabama Secretary of State is in charge of keeping records of LLCs in Alabama. In addition to LLCs, the Secretary of State has information on:
- Domestic Corporations
- Foreign Corporations
- Limited Partnerships
- Limited Companies
- Limited Liability Partnerships
A business entity that has registered with the Business Services Section can be searched through the state’s online database search tool. This tool is important when forming a Limited Liability Company, as every LLC in the state must have a unique name. By using the database, you can save considerable time, as LLC paperwork will be returned should a name be requested that is already registered.
Look at our simple step-by-step guide on how to use the search tool below to find out whether the LLC name you want to use is available.
Step 1 – Click on the Business Entity Search Page of the Alabama Secretary of State’s website. The page that appears will look like the screenshot below.
Step 2 – Enter your desired LLC name in the “Name” field. Also select “Domestic Limited Liability Company” in the Type dropdown.
In this example, we will search for “Mighty Muscle Cleaning.”
As you can see from the screenshot below, the name Mighty Muscle Cleaning is an LLC that is active and in good standing in the state. This means the name can’t be registered by anyone else.
